The Colour Index is the Society of Dyers and Colourists’ flagship publication, but the Society’s output is broader. This note lists the other SDC titles and how to access them.
Coloration Technology
The peer-reviewed journal of dye and pigment chemistry, continuously published since 1885 (originally as the Journal of the Society of Dyers and Colourists). Coloration Technology covers synthetic dye chemistry, pigment formulation, fastness science, surface coatings, and the chemistry of textile finishing. Available through Wiley under SDC membership or institutional subscription. See the journal page for back-issues and submission guidelines.
Conference proceedings
Proceedings of the SDC International Conference (biennial since 1979) are issued in the year following each conference. Recent volumes are available as PDFs to SDC members; print copies of historical proceedings are held in the SDC library.
Technical monographs
The SDC commissions occasional technical monographs on subjects of standing interest to the colour community — recent titles cover effluent treatment, microplastic-free disperse dyeing, and the chemistry of natural-dye revival. See sdc.org.uk for the current catalogue.
Member bulletin
The Society Bulletin is the SDC’s quarterly member-facing publication, with news from the regional sections, committee updates, and event listings. Members receive it as part of membership; back-issues are available in the member library.
Historical publications
The four print editions of the Colour Index (1924, 1956, 1971, 2002) are preserved as part of the Heritage archive. Selected pre-1924 publications — including Schultz’s 1888 dye catalogue — are also held in the SDC library and available to researchers on request.
